Leisurely Legacy Crafting with Repurposed Memories

My Story

My Story

Hi! I'm Judi Roux (pronounced roo like the gravy mix).

I've been an educator for over 30 years and an avid DIYer/crafter for many more. I was greatly influenced by two intelligent, creative, and resourceful women, my mother and her mother (my maternal grandmother). They cooked, sewed, knitted, crocheted, and painted wonderful projects and willingly shared their talents with me. I still love to bake and crochet, with some sewing and painting added to the mix.

My mission:

  •  To cherish legacy crafts (like crocheting) often performed by women artisans.

  •  To embrace folk engineering techniques to repurpose and upcycle available fabrics or yarns.

  •  To encourage others in Mindful Making for stress relief and economic empowerment.

The Why Story

My crafting passions include finding new purposes for items that might otherwise be thrown away. My first t-shirt yarn project materialized when I was decluttering my closet. A t-shirt that my brother wore to a family reunion caught my eye. He had recovered from a stroke and emphasized the importance of being proactive regarding cardiovascular health, especially for genetic reasons, and he unfortunately passed away shortly after.

I had worn the t-shirt for painting projects, and although I didn't feel comfortable wearing it in public, I couldn't bring myself to throw it away. I discovered a YouTube video showing how to cut t-shirts into yarn, so I cut a few t-shirts into yarn balls. I found a free pattern online and adapted it to make my first basket (pictured to the right).

Later, I began volunteering at a local donation center and saved the stained, ripped, or unwearable shirts from the trash can. I refined my cutting strategies and designed my own patterns for tote bags, purses, and various household items. And now, I'm sharing my ideas with other eco-warriors.
